Originally designed for the US Armed Forces (complete with gun turrets and radar,) the Hummer has exploded into the mainstream culture as a high performance luxury off-road vehicle since 1992. Much of the attention came from Operation Desert Storm, where Hummers played a significant role.
The original H1 version of the Hummer is based directly on the military model, whereas the H2 and H3 are geared more for the "civilian" market.
In addition to their impressive stature and presence, Hummers have an impressive performance and racing track record- 11 wins in the Baja 1000 and sweeping victories in the 2008 "Terribles Town 250" race.
